Vols Continue To Bolster Football Staff With New Addition

The Tennessee Volunteers football team has added another experienced coach to its analyst department.

Veteran coach Alan Williams, who is bringing over 20 years of coaching experience, joins the staff in a support role. Williams began his career at his alma mater, The College of William & Mary, where he played wide receiver alongside Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and Bills head coach Sean McDermott.

He started coaching as a running backs coach in 1996 before making the jump to the NFL in 2001, landing a role with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Tony Dungy. He later followed Dungy to the Indianapolis Colts, serving as defensive backs coach during their Super Bowl winning season with VFL Peyton Manning.

Williams went on to lead defenses as a coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings and most recently the Chicago Bears in 2022, before stepping away from coaching in 2023 due to personal health and family reasons. He joins the Volunteers as the third analyst hire this offseason, following the additions of Evan Crabtree and John Bonamego.

With Williams’ expertise in defensive backs, he brings valuable insight to a secondary that has already taken some hits this offseason, including the recent departure of starter Ricky Gibson to the transfer portal. His experience should provide a much needed boost to Tennessee’s defensive staff as they look to rebuild and strengthen the unit heading into next season.
