Week 13 SEC Letter Grades: Georgia Through Mississippi State

GEORGIA: B

The play of Georgia’s defense is the reason I’ve got it pegged in the B tier after a 59-21 win against UMass. The Minutemen ran for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns while keeping their deficit to 10 into the middle of the third quarter.

On the other hand, Georgia’s offense played its A game. Carson Beck tossed four touchdowns in a turnover free outing while Nate Frazier rushed for 136 yards and a trio of touchdowns.

On to Clean Old-Fashioned hate.

KENTUCKY: C-

The Wildcats fought hard in Austin, but they came to DKR running on a quarter of a tank.

Brock Vandagriff left with an injury around halftime, forcing Kentucky to turn to Cutter Boley. Outside of a deep shot to Barion Brown, Boley’s day wasn’t one to remember, and the rush attack only yielded 21 yards.

The defense actually kept it a game into the late stages of the fourth quarter with this Jamon Dumas-Johnson fumble recovery and touchdown.

The unfortunate reality for Kentucky is its bowl streak has come to an end after eight seasons. This team plays hard on the road, but it doesn’t have the offensive pieces to compete with the best.

LSU: B

Vanderbilt has been a challenging test across the SEC this season and LSU was in search of its first win in a month, so LSU makes the B tier as a result.

Aside from its first play on the field, the defense didn’t allow itself to get bogged down by the simplicity of the Commodores’ offensive scheme.

The offense’s outing was much improved from the one we saw in the swamp. The line was able to keep Vandy out of the backfield, Garrett Nussmeier took care of the football, and Josh Williams broke out for a couple of 20-plus yard touchdown runs.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: D

I’m being nice again and giving Mississippi State a D for trying to stay in a 39-20 loss to Missouri.

The game went sideways on the second play of the Bulldogs’ third possession when they lost a fumble for a touchdown in the other direction.

Davon Booth broke out for a 43-yard rush touchdown to make it a two-score game in the early stages of the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to stay in the game.

The Bulldogs limp into the Egg Bowl at 2-9, not deserving to be heckled by an opposing coach at the end of a blowout loss.
