Week 11 SEC Letter Grades: Mississippi State Through Ole Miss

MISSISSIPPI STATE: D

I don’t know why, but I can’t quite put Mississippi State in the F tier this week.

Maybe it’s because stayed within 20 points of a ranked opponent on the road. Probably because it ran the ball pretty well against one of the best defenses in the league.

There’s no doubt this team has fight, it just lacks the talent to compete against the big boys of the SEC this year. Jeff Lebby has the right philosophy, but he’s a couple years away from having the Bulldogs in a spot where they’re competitive again.

MISSOURI: B-

I’ll admit I’m generous to Mizzou because of Brady Cook’s injury. This wasn’t a pretty win by any means, but you take any SEC wins in this new 16-team league

This team had a couple of nice moments over the course of the game. Receiver and Oklahoma transfer Theo Wease had four catches for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns against his old team.

The other was this miraculous scoop and score in the final seconds of the game, probably Mizzou’s biggest miracle since joining the SEC.

OKLAHOMA: D

The Sooners shot themselves in every square inch of their feet at Missouri.

The offense did far more to lose this game than the defense did for Oklahoma. It put the ball on the ground four times in the loss, including the above scoop and score in the final seconds.

The sad part is Billy Bowman actually ran back a fumble for 43 yards a few possessions earlier. The seat is getting hot in Norman.

OLE MISS: A

Little Game Lane no longer exists after a 28-10 win over one of the most dominant programs in the country in the last 10 years.

Possibly the most impressive part of this game was the touchdown drive led early by backup quarterback Austin Simmons. Dart came back on the next possession, and the Rebels didn’t look back.

As I mentioned in Georgia’s letter grade, the Rebels’ defensive line ate for five sacks and nine tackles for loss against what most of us thought was a strong offensive line.

The dream is alive for Ole Miss.
