“We Got Rid of One Maggot, It’s Time to Get Rid of This Maggot”

Call in sports radio is a beautiful thing.

You never know what the caller is going to drop on you on the other side of the line, and it can make for lasting memories for everyone listening.

Postgame shows or shows in the midst of an important season often attract the lunatic fringe of callers.

We’ve experienced this first hand here at Fanrun. The last three Voluntary Reaction post game shows have featured a guy tripping on all kinds of substances in New Jersey, on air divorce with an angry wife shouting “GET OFF THE DAMN SPORTS RADIO!”, and a man unknowingly placing a high risk bet that won him thousands of dollars.

But there was one thing in common with all of those VRs. All of them took place after big Tennessee wins.

When things aren’t going well, the lunatics on the line become loonier. It happened here at Tennessee in both 2017 and early 2021.

Most recently, it happened at ESPN 680 in Louisville with an angry Kentucky fan by the alias of Chris from Richmond.

The Wildcats suffered in a thorough 31-6 beatdown loss to a less than stellar South Carolina team at Kroger Field last weekend.

With the loss, Kentucky has now lost eight of its last 10 SEC home games and is 2-28 under Mark Stoops against SEC teams with winning records (according to this caller).

Stoops deserves plenty of credit for the job he’s done at Kentucky. He’s pieced together two of its four 10 win seasons in program history, but he’s posted seven win seasons in each of the last two years without signs the program may improve.

Chris called Stoops a, well, I’ll just let you listen.

You can’t get a feel for how unhinged this call is by reading any explanation I could possibly write.
