VFL Trey Smith Could End Up Leaving Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are not expected to franchise tag VFL offensive lineman Trey Smith.

That’s according to a report from Pro Football Talk.

The Chiefs also will reportedly not use a transition tag.

So if Kansas City is to retain Smith, it will not be under a tag.

That means that now the possibility of the Chiefs losing him is more likely.

“Smith has started all 80 regular season and playoff games he’s played since joining the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, which has made him a key part of the protection for Patrick Mahomes as the team’s right guard,” the PFT report stated.

“Given the need to improve that protection at left tackle this offseason, the prospect of losing another offensive lineman isn’t a good one for the Chiefs.”

The Chiefs offensive line was bullied in the Super Bowl defeat vs. Philadelphia.

Smith certainly is a guy they need to try to retain.

But if they don’t, it will be interesting to see where the VFL ends up.

Titans???

More likely the Chicago Bears, according to another report.

The Chiefs apparently have just over $5 million in cap space which would not be enough to re-sign Smith.
