Field of 68 has named Tennessee senior Jahmai Mashack its National Defensive Player of the Year.
The announcement came Monday morning.
It is the first such nationwide defensive recognition, from any outlet, in program history — according to a release from UT.
Mashack ranks No. 2 nationally with a 7.1 defensive box plus-minus. He has a 6.26 career mark (eighth best at the DI level over the last 15 seasons).
As a team, Tennessee ranks No. 1 in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency ratings.
“Mashack's play has also helped Tennessee rank first nationally in field-goal percentage defense (37.7), first in effective field-goal percentage defense (44.0), second in 3-point percentage defense (27.7) and seventh in scoring defense (61.9),” the release states.
Mashack has 49 steals and 19 blocks this season.
