WTVQ in Lexington, KY reported late Monday night that Tennessee special teams and tight ends coordinator Mark Elder has been hired as the new head coach of the Eastern Kentucky Colonels.
Elder has been an assistant coach to Butch Jones since his days at Central Michigan. He coached linebackers for Jones at CMU then moved to running backs, tight ends, and special teams at Cincinnati and has been the coordinator of special teams and tight ends during Jones tenure with the Vols.
This is a big loss as the Vols statistically had the 2nd best special teams unit in the nation. Tennessee also had the nation’s leading kick returner in Evan Berry and 2nd leading punt returner in Cam Sutton.
A formal announcement is expected Thursday and Elder will meet the team at EKU on Tuesday.
