Vols

Tennessee hit the practice field Tuesday afternoon in preparation for UAB, who comes to town this weekend for homecoming. Though most eyes were on the quarterback situation, here are a few notes from practice.

Full highlights at the bottom.

Darnell Wright and Jahmir Johnson were watching on today during viewing periods, then heading straight to work with trainers on the side as we were leaving. The Vols are hoping to get Wright back soon, as he’s dealing with an ankle injury according to Jeremy Pruitt. Johnson continues to work his way back to 100 percent from a knee injury. The Vols might have to rely on a few offensive linemen this weekend against UAB, if Wright potentially can’t go.

At the QB position, Jarrett Guarantano was sporting a very large glove to cover the cast he has around his hand.During the QB and RB work, it was Brian Maurer and JT Shrout taking most of the work, with JG off to the side. The QB’s continued to work through these drills, with Maurer looking to go first during rotation. Though it’s always a crapshoot.

The QB group then headed over to work with the wide receivers and Tee Martin. At times it looked like Shrout was working the 1’s, followed by Maurer and Guarantano. As the period continued, Maurer was putting some fire on the ball and connecting with his receivers, after a few dropped balls from the group. Both Guarantano and Shrout seemed to get on page with the group towards the end. I’ll be interested to see the rotation going into the weekend, though it looked like Maurer got the first rep as we were leaving the field and the team in 11-on-11.

One of the highlights of the day came when Jauan Jennings took a few reps at QB. On one of these reps, the former high school QB dropped back and hit Tyler Byrd with a beautiful ball down the middle of the field. I’d imagine they’ll test UAB in the wildcat package this weekend.
