Vols Continue Gamecock Prep, Minus Maurer

The Tennessee football team hit the practice field on Wednesday afternoon, as they continue to prepare for the Gamecocks. The Vols continued their prep work without starting QB, Brian Maurer.

QB Brian Maurer, was headed to Nashville this morning to be seen by doctors at Vanderbilt Medical Facility. They’ve been known to be one of the leading centers of neurology. Maurer, who Head Coach Jeremy Pruitt called “doubtful” during the SEC teleconference today, is recovering from a concussion he sustained in Saturday’s loss to Alabama.

The Vols continued prepping JT Shrout & Jarrett Guarantano on Wednesday. Shrout, who looked to be running in front of JG during work with the RB’s, was getting equal reps with Guarantano during the WR drills. Both QB’s looked better during the open portion of practice, with most of the throws on target.

Brian Niedermeyer was working on a lot blocking drills with his TE group this afternoon. This group continues to get better when it comes to run blocking, especially on the edges. DWA & Pope were getting an earful from Niedermeyer to finish the block, This is something Tennessee will definitely need to continue striving in, especially going up against a fantastic USC defensive line.

Tennessee moved into 11v11 as we were leaving the field, but no “Sandstorm” today. The Vols will practice one more time this week on Thursday, which I suspect will be more of a “walk Through” as they look to stay healthy before the Saturday showdown.

Tennessee will host South Carolina at 4PM ET on Saturday. The Vols are hoping to make a run towards a bowl game, which will likely come down to their performance on Saturday.. Continue following Trey Wallace on Twitter @TreyWallace_ & @FoxSportsKnox for the latest news.
