Jeremy Pruitt and staff once again kept the recruiting trail hot Sunday afternoon. The Vols added 4-Star Lone Star State Dual-Threat QB Kaidon Salter.
The 4-Star gunslinger’s announcement came via Twitter and Instagram just two hours after the Vols added another 4-Star in OLB Aaron Willis out of Maryland.
The 6’1 185lb prospect is the #1 Dual-Threat QB in the state of Texas and has a highlight tape that reminds me of a young Deshaun Watson with his big arm and incredible pocket presence/mobility. The signal-caller also has an incredible junior season mixtape that was published to YouTube just a few weeks ago.
2020 QB Room
The addition of Kaidon Salter ensures that the Vols will have a full QB room for the foreseeable future. Currently, the Vols have six quarterbacks on the 2020 roster with Jarrett Guarantano, Harrison Bailey, Brian Maurer, Jimmy Holliday, J.T. Shrout, and Kasim Hill.
This number is likely to be lower by the end of the 2020 season with possible position changes and potential transfer opportunities. One thing that is for sure is that Jarrett Guarantano will have departed by the time of the 2021 offseason.
The 2021 QB competition will be one to watch. 5-Star Harrison Bailey will be the front runner, but he will be challenged by the likes of Brian Maurer and Kaidon Salter.
The most interesting thing about this potential battle is that all three QBs will bring something different to the table.
Bailey will bring his strong arm and pinpoint accuracy.
Maurer will bring his athleticism and gutsy play.
Salter will bring his deep ball accuracy and his ability to extend the play from the pocket.
All of these abilities will be assets to the Vols in the 2021 season. Ultimately, the decision will be made by the Vols QB coach Chris Wienke in conjunction with offensive coordinator Jim Chaney.
One thing that is for sure is that Tennessee fans will support their starting QB 100%… until he throws his first interception against Florida.
