The 2020 Tennessee football team has added another piece to their team. USC Grad Transfer Velus Jones Jr. has announced that he will play his final season in Knoxville.
The WR/KR has a completely different level of speed that this coaching staff was looking to gain. Velus, who is from Mobile, Alabama, had a real connection with his former recruiter & current Tennessee WR coach Tee Martin. Jones, who was very close to transferring to Tennessee last year, will be able to help the Vols with his veteran play.
Velus decided he didn’t need to take a visit to any other school when he entered the transfer portal recently. He had already visited Knoxville on multiple occasions. Tee Martin jumped on the opportunity, once he hit the market again. Velus told me that the Vols had a spot for him & was ready to take his commitment.
Velus spoke with Fox Sports Knoxville on Thursday night. “I can’t wait to get to Knoxville, I’ll be arriving on Sunday & enrolling in classes on Monday”.
When asked about his relationship with the Tennessee staff, Velus spoke about his new head coach “Coach Pruitt is a straight forward man. He’s also a business man & definitely a man of his word. I really appreciated that”
Velus is not a stranger to Tennessee, as he’s taken multiple visits in the past ” I liked Tennessee coming out of high school, they were actually 3rd on my list. I have a good friend in Knoxville, with my boy Shawn Shamburger being there, it makes it even better”
“It was just a great home feeling. The atmosphere & the fans are great, I cant wait to play in front of them”
Jones has gotten to know OC Jim Chaney over time and said “Chaney is a fun guy, he loves his job & loves football. I really like Coach Chaney, he’s one of my favorite coaches”
Velus attended Saraland High School, just outside of Mobile, where he was a 4 star that was headed to Southern Cal. It was there that his relationship with Tee Martin began, with him ending up at USC.
Velus said he knew Tennessee was a school he could imagine himself at, again “Once I entered the portal, Tennessee called and asked if I’d be willing come” Once it was finally wrapping up, Tee Martin texted Velus three words ” Let’s get it.”
When asked about his relationship with Tee “He was always hard on me, he knew what kind of receiver I could be, it was always tough love, but laugh and giggles at times. He told me the ways they could open the playbook with my skill set, Tee told me everything they needed in a WR, and I was it”
“I know I have to come in & play my role. They’ve talked about me coming in and playing in the slot along with special teams knowing they can open up the playbook with me & I’ll be aggressive”
Though his stats weren’t huge this past season for USC, the speedster showed off his skill set in other ways, especially on special teams. Velus is a veteran player who will only help a young group, that loses Jauan Jennings, Marquez Callaway & Tyler Byrd.
Overall, this is a very nice pickup for Tennessee that could pay off in many different ways on the field. This Vols team could’ve just landed a hidden gem, we’ll see how Jim Chaney & Tee Martin develop the young man for their system. The news just continues to get better for the 2020 Vols.
When asked about a message for Tennessee fans, Velus was straight to the point “I am guaranteeing to you I will give my all & 2020 is going to be magical. I promise you that”
