The Vols Still Riding The Struggle Bus But Get The Win

Winning is never easy, especially in the SEC, and especially when you’re struggling on offense. However, the Vols bounced back from their two-game losing streak with a 56-53 win over Mississippi State.

That’s the word of the game.

All I heard was how much Tennessee was missing Jaden Springer, and he was the reason for the recent failure. While I agree Springer is important, there is more wrong with this basketball team than not having Springer on the court.

The Vols had Springer on the court, and they still SUCKED BOOTY SWEAT. 56 points?

Having Springer back certainly helped, but he wasn’t the reason for the recent failure.

The answer is easy.

Rick Barnes won’t change his offense to fit the players. I mentioned this a while ago, but Rick doesn’t have the players run the offense he wants to run.

In this offensive system, the point guard has to start the offense deep in the defensive zone. Making the first pass before getting to the three-point line isn’t acceptable. PGs have to get deep in the lane, and that isn’t happening.

I love Santiago Vescovi, and he’s excellent at seeing the floor and finding open guys. However, without a faster tempo, Vesovi can’t take advantage of the defense. You want Vescovi to run with the numbers and find the open spot on the court.

Jordan Bone was masterful as getting deep in the lane early in the shot clock, and it worked perfectly. There are unlimited options when you get to the free line to start Barnes’ motion offense.

Another thing is the bigs (John Fulkerson) aren’t fighting for position hard enough. Grant Williams was masterful at gaining the best post position and made it easy for entry passes.

Sorry, I went away from the Mississippi State game, but the offense is a problem, and if Barnes doesn’t fix it, the season will be over in early March.

Thank GOD for Yves Pons. Pons against showed out on the defensive end and scored the most points with 13. Pons did foul out, but without his energy, the Vols don’t win.

Vescovi and Springer are hurt, but they played hard. Together, the two guards scored 16 points despite shooting like shit.

We need Fulkerson to step up and lead this team like he did last season.

All in all, it was a much-needed bounce-back win over Mississippi State. Next up is Kansas, and well, we will see what happens.
