Jeremy Pruitt addressed the media Friday afternoon, earlier than scheduled due to positive Covid cases on the team.
Pruitt said “Today we elected not to practice, we continue to constantly test, we’ve had really good results. We had a few more positive tests so I elected to shut down practice and we tested everyone again this morning to see where we are at. Our number one goal is to protect everyone associated with the program. As we get the results back we will se where we are at and start practice up accordingly.”
Pruitt added “We gave our guys eight days off around the fourth of July. They had a chance to go home and that was at a point in time when we thought the season was going to start on time, so we wanted to give them a chance to be able to spend time with their families.”
“We’ve had a total of 23 guys on our team test positive. The first time we tested we had zero. Over the period of time we’ve been back we’ve had 23 total. There were lots of lessons for us to learn in there,”
This isn’t the first time Tennessee has been hit with Covid cases and it won’t be the last.
Players were told to not come to the facility, according to sources. They have held their position meetings on zoom the last 24 hours. The Vols were scheduled to practice on Saturday, but that is now in jeopardy, pending the results of the tests this morning.
Tennessee student athletes are scheduled to participate in a “March on Knoxville” saturday, to protest social injustices.
Other news to come out of the press conference was Tennessee WR DeAngelo Gibbs will not play this season. Pruitt said is “opting out”, and will focus on academics during the season. He is still a part of the team.
Jeremy Pruitt also spoke about Jarrett Guarantano, along with Harrison Bailey “Jarrett has been consistent, he’s had 6 really good days. At our last practice, Harrison really had a period where he really shined. He’s got to continue getting reps.”
Tennessee will continue holding meetings through Zoom with their players until all test results are returned.
