Update: The “Volunteer Classic” has been cancelled. Tennessee was scheduled to play Charlotte on Wednesday and VCU on Friday. In regards to the participation in the “Jimmy V Classic”, in which the Vols were scheduled to play Gonzaga, Tennessee is still waiting.
“Tennessee’s participation in next week’s Jimmy V Classic in Indianapolis has not been ruled out at this point, as a projected activity-resumption date for the Volunteers will be determined following further monitoring.”
The Tennessee basketball team was scheduled to host the Volunteer Classic this week to kickoff the 2020-2021 season, but now in limbo. Rick Barnes and others have tested positive.
The team has released this statement.
“The Tennessee men’s basketball program has paused all team activities following multiple positive COVID-19 test results among its Tier 1 personnel, which consists of coaches, student-athletes, team managers, and support staff. The positive test results were detected during routine COVID-19 surveillance testing, which is conducted three times a week in accordance with NCAA and SEC guidelines. The tests that returned as positive were conducted Sunday afternoon, and the program is getting retested today.”
Rick Barnes tested positive and has entered isolation protocol.
“The basketball program is following SEC, local and university public health guidelines to prioritize the health and safety of all student-athletes and staff as well as the campus and local community.”
The Vols are scheduled to update the status of this week’s games on Tuesday, though it sounds like it will be tough to play on.
