Tennessee Assistant Coach Jay Graham Receives Recruiting Show-Cause

The Texas A&M football program received their punishment from the NCAA on Thursday, stemming from impermissible contact with a high school prospect.

In the release, the NCAA handed down these punishments to Jimbo Fisher:

  • “A six-month show-cause order for the head coach. The terms of the show-cause order include a previously served nine-day ban on phone calls, emails or texts with prospects in January 2020; a reduction in off-campus recruiting contact days by three for the December 2019 through January 2020 contact period; a ban on all off-campus recruiting activities for the fall 2020 contact period; additional one-on-one rules education; and a public statement from the head coach addressing the violations.”

These, along with other penalties that have already been served, were dealt with by A&M and Fisher.

The assistant coach involved in these infractions is current Tennessee RBs coach Jay Graham, who was formerly at A&M. The Aggies released on Thursday that Graham was the other coach that was involved in the illegal recruiting activities.

The penalties for Graham are as follows:

  • “A six-month show-cause order for the assistant coach. The terms of the show-cause order include a previously served nine-day ban on phone calls, emails or texts with prospects in January 2020; a reduction in off-campus recruiting contact days by three for the December 2019 through January 2020 contact period; a ban on all off-campus recruiting activities for the fall 2020 contact period; and additional one-on-one rules education.”

As you can tell, most of the penalties have been served. Graham will not be allowed to recruit off-campus during the Fall 2020 contact period, but he can be involved in any type of recruiting that occurs on campus, according to Tennessee

I reached out to Tennessee for comment on the matter and they released the following statement to me:

  • “During the process of hiring Coach Jay Graham, we were made aware of the circumstances at his previous institution, and we vetted it thoroughly in accordance with NCAA and SEC bylaws. We established and maintain extremely high confidence in Coach Graham’s commitment to compliance and are proud to have him on our staff.”

This has been floating around for a while, which is why it shouldn’t be surprising that it was released on a Thursday before July 4th holiday. Texas A&M was eager to release Graham’s name, since he no longer works for the Aggies

Tennessee will carry on with its recruiting, it will be interesting to see how this plays out during the evaluation periods. Graham could still end up being allowed to participate.
