It’s Not Sad To Say Goodbye: John Currie And Tennessee Officially Part Ways

Former Tennessee athletic director John Currie and the university have finally parted ways.

Currie, the man who led maybe the most tumultuous coaching search ever, reached a settlement with the Tennessee to mutually part on Thursday. The university will pay him just under $2.5 million. On March 22nd, 2018, nearly four months since his initial suspension on Dec. 1, 2017, Currie will officially no longer work for the university.

As if anyone actually needed reminding, Currie’s eight-month term as athletic director was one of the most embarrassing for any AD in recent memory. Starting with the way-too-late firing of former head football coach Butch Jones, Currie then proceeded to lead a coaching search that was nothing short of catastrophic.

His attempt at hiring Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano led to a fan-run uprising many now simply refer to as “The Schianamo”. After this fan-directed coup, Currie also managed to botch the hire of not one, not two, not three, but FOUR other potential head coaches. The hires of Jeff Brohm, Dave Doeren, Mike Gundy and Mike Leach all managed to fall through in their own fun and exciting ways.

Needless to say, the hapless athletic director was finally suspended after these failed attempts and now he is officially no longer a member of the staff at the University of Tennessee. Legendary former football coach Phillip Fulmer was asked to step in as athletic director in the wake of the Currie campaign and the rest, as they say, is history.
