Tennessee-Alabama By The Numbers

Randy Sartin/USA TODAY Sports

Tennessee (3-3, 0-3 SEC) travels to Tuscaloosa on Saturday to play No. 1 Alabama (7-0, 4-0 SEC) in the next chapter of the Third Saturday in October rivalry with both teams trending in opposite directions. The Volunteers hope to bounce back after a heartbreaking 15-9 loss to SEC East foe South Carolina, while Alabama looks to add the Vols to an impressive resume of SEC wins. Let’s take a look at some pertinent numbers for Saturday’s game.

0 – Number of touchdowns the Volunteers have scored in their last 10 quarters of football. After a dismal performance against the Georgia Bulldogs that resulted in Tennessee’s first scoreless game since 1994, the Vols scored just three field goals against South Carolina.

2.34 – The average yards per rush that the Alabama defense has allowed this year. The Crimson Tide shouldn’t have any trouble stopping Tennessee offensively when a struggling passing game takes on the best rush defense in the nation.

4th – Alabama’s FBS rank in total defense this season. Even after the loss of key players like Jonathan Allen and Reuben Foster, the Crimson Tide defense has again found itself near the top of the defensive charts.

4 – Number of total rushing yards on the season by Jarrett Guarantano. Guarantano has shown great promise as a dual-threat quarterback, but with an offensive line that is struggling to protect him, he has been subject to more than a few tackles for loss and sacks.

7 – Jersey number of Tennessee defensive back Rashaan Gaulden, whose play has been phenomenal in his last few games. With a pass defense that is ranked No. 1 in the SEC and No. 3 in the country, Jalen Hurts will have his work cut out for him as he tries to get comfortable with his young receiving core.

18.5 – Average number of pass attempts for Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts. With a running back core that rivals any other in the nation, Hurts has only had to throw more than 20 passes in one game all season. It also helps that Hurts himself averages 79.7 rush yards per game, more than Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough.

36 – Alabama opened up as a 36-point favorite against the Volunteers, the largest underdog role in Tennessee history.

48.2 – Trevor Daniel’s average yardage per punt, which ranks No. 3 in the nation and only .4 yards away from tops in the country. Daniel has played extraordinarily well this season, and will need to be at his best to try and pin the Alabama offense as deep in its own territory as possible.

120 – Number of receiving yards breakout star Marquez Callaway has accumulated since his 115-yard performance against Georgia Tech. Callaway hasn’t seen the end zone since the Indiana State game and was nowhere to be found against UMass and Georgia, racking up zero catches in both games. Butch Jones wants to get the playmaker more involved this week.

124 – Out of 129 ranked FBS teams, the Vols are ranked No. 124 in rush defense. With highly-praised recruits Kahlil McKenzie and Shy Tuttle at defensive tackle alongide veteran linemen Kongbo and Kendal Vickers, the defensive line shows great potential — the production just hasn’t been there this season.

126 – Number of wins Nick Saban has as the head coach of the Crimson Tide. Saban has sealed his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in college football history and with his ability to attract highly rated recruits, he’s certainly looking to add a few more rings to his collection.

302.6 – Rushing yards per game that the Alabama Crimson Tide average. With Damien Harris, Bo Scarbrough and Jalen Hurts in the backfield, the Vols will have their work cut out for them on Saturday.

4,015 – Days since Tennessee last beat Alabama. October 21, 2006 is a date that haunts Tennessee fans all over the country. That day was the last time the Volunteers were victorious over the Tide, and with the FPI giving the Vols a 2.1% chance to win on Saturday, that streak may continue for another year.
