Super Bowl LII was maybe the most incredible way to send this NFL season off. We lull into the offseason now, but there’s plenty to think on after the Eagles won their first ever Super Bowl with a dramatic 41-33 win over the 21st Century dynasty that is the New England Patriots. Here are a few things we can take away from such an incredible game.
Doug Pederson’s aggressive playcalling won Philly its first title.
Second-year head coach Doug Pederson put his foot on the gas and never let up when it came to his offensive scheme against New England. When Pederson showed he was willing to go for not once — but twice — on fourth down early in the game with the lead, he was sending a message; the Eagles were there to do everything necessary in order to bring home the Lombardi Trophy.
Nick Foles’ touchdown catch on the fourth down trick play before the end of the first half wasn’t even the play of the game. That came when the Eagles converted a fourth and short inside their own territory by passing to Zach Ertz to extend what become the go-ahead scoring drive. Pederson has plenty of guts and faith in his team to pull those off.
Tom Brady could, and just might, play for at least another three years.
If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times: Tom Brady is the best to ever do it. And while the Patriots may have lost last night, it wasn’t because Brady failed to do his job. The guy just won the league MVP, and he threw for over 500 yards and three touchdowns last night. And he’s 40 years old!
There has been a lot of talk about him possibly retiring. He’s going to be on the backside of his aging trip to 80 before the start of next season, and he’s probably losing his offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, to the Indianapolis Colts.
Sunday night showed Brady has no intentions of slowing down. He’s a competitor, and he just lost his third Super Bowl after playing one of the best games of his career. Odds are, he will be back to avenge this loss.
There might be some quarterback controversy in Philly next season.
Who would’ve thought that, after starting quarterback and MVP candidate Carson Wentz went down with a season-ending knee injury, his backup would lead the Eagles to the franchise’s first Super Bowl? And not only did he get them there, he played incredibly and took home the MVP award!
Is it that crazy to think that the Eagles might question who they want their starting quarterback to be next season? Wentz is expected to make a full recovery and be ready when the season starts in September, but Foles literally just won Philly a title. That can’t be overlooked.
However, Foles only has one year left on his contract, and the Eagles undoubtedly see Wentz as the quarterback of the future. So there could be some trade offers in the air next season. It’s easy to assume that some NFL teams are licking their chops after watching his performance last night, and would love a chance to make Foles their franchise quarterback.
