Pre-Spring Football Press Conference Odds & Ends

Tennessee football head coach Butch Jones, defensive coordinator Bob Shoop, and offensive coordinator Mike DeBord gave a press conference leading up to the start of spring football practice on Monday. Butch Jones gave some news about injuries and position changes and the coaches each gave some interesting quotes. Here’s a quick recap:

-Jones gave a quick rundown of a few player position changes:

Austin Smith will be moving from linebacker to defensive end

Micah Abernathy will be moving from cornerback to safety

Jason Croom will be moving from receiver to tight end

– Five defensive linemen are out for the spring: Derek Barnett, Shy Tuttle, Kendall Vickers, Kyle Phillips, and Andrew Butcher.

-Offensive linemen Jashon Robertson and Chance Hall will also be out during spring practice.

-DB Evan Berry, WR Josh Malone, TE Joe Stocstill, and RB Joe Young will all be out during the spring, as well.

-Wide receiver Vincent Perry will be “limited” due to a hamstring issue

-Linebacker Quart’e Sapp was granted a medical redshirt for the 2015 season after being injured for most of the year.

-Cam Sutton will switch back to jersey number 23 after wearing number 7 during 2015 in honor of Rashaan Gaulden, who was out for the entire season due to injury.

-There were a few new Butchisms:

“Technique over tactics”

“We’re focusing on the climb, not the mountain.”

“You have to jump in the pool to learn how to swim.”

And, of course, Butch got a mention of Jon Gruden in, saying his staff spent three days with Gruden during the offseason.

-Alexis Johnson is still suspended for an indefinite amount of time after he was arrested for aggravated assault last month

-Wide receiver Jajuan Jennings won’t get any reps at safety during the spring

-When asked by a reporter from The Tennessean if he will deny the allegations made by Drae Bowles in the sexual assault lawsuit, Butch indicated that he stands by his statement denying the allegations. He then asked for only spring football-related questions.
