A bid was announced last month to bring a WNBA expansion team to Tennessee.

Now, the Sports Business Journal reports, that is unlikely to happen.

At least in the near future.

Cleveland is likely to receive the next WNBA team in 2028 when the league expands to 16 teams.

The city has a bid of approximately $250 million along with the history of an original WNBA team that went under in 2003. It will be the return of the Cleveland Rockers.

While the league may soon after expand to 18 teams, the Journal reports that Houston and Philadelphia are the more likely cities to get those bids.

The 17th and 18th teams would likely be added in 2029-30.

So while it’s not officially over for Nashville to get the Tennessee Summitt, it does seem unlikely as things stand today.

The Tennessee Summitt bid is backed by Bill Haslam, Peyton Manning, Candace Parker, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill.
