Tennessee Baseball Has A Good Problem

Tony Vitello is having trouble figuring out who to start on the baseball team.

We just have too much talent. How great that is.

Tennessee freshman batter Jay Abernathy did not start over the weekend, although he might be in the lineup before you know it.

“We went with some older guys,” Vitello said. “If it was kind of close, try to get some mature guys out there. … You guys were at scrimmages, he could very easily walk up to that office and say, ‘I deserve a start.’ And all I could do is shake my head and say, ‘You’re right.’”

Vitello said he likes the idea of bringing Abernathy in during the middle of the game.

“I like the idea where you can pick a spot where he pinch runs in the middle of the game,” Vitello said. “You can give Jay a cheater’s start if somebody is already on base and you pinch run. Because he can play a bunch of different positions, I think we can do that throughout the year.”

We’ll see how long it takes for the talented freshman to gain a larger role with the team.

There’s a lot of good players out there.
