SEC Announces Tiebreakers for Championship

As SEC Media Days concluded in Dallas in July, the tiebreaker for an SEC championship appearance was still a mystery that loomed large in the conference.

The league office finally addressed that question on Wednesday.

There are six tiers to the SEC’s tiebreaking process.

The first tiebreaker will take into account if one team has a head-to-head victory over the other in the regular season.

If they haven’t met in the regular season, the league will look at the record the teams vying for the final spot have against final opponents.

If that record is even, the league will then examine records against top teams in the conference and will do the same with other teams that are in the tie.

Cumulative winning percentage among the opponents of tied teams is the next measure the league would take. If that doesn’t work, scoring margins against conference opponents will be examined.

If all of this doesn’t work, the tie break will go to a random draw.
