Last Week: 5-10-1
Season Record: 63-56-5
Smart Home Fix Lock of the Week (8-4):
LA Tech +6.5 vs. FAU
When you tempt the gods of betting, they don’t look kindly on you. Last week Lane Kiffin tried to be cute and not cover the football game’s 6.5-point spread. The play he made was actually the right call. That’s not the point.
Even making a harmless joke after the game about the point spread puts a target on Lane’s head. Those who believe in superstition will go heavy against FAU the rest of the season.
Come Fly with Me:
Penn State -31 vs. Rutgers
No playoff? No care. Team is playing now for a shot to edge out the other B1G teams that won’t make the college football playoff! Plus, if you think James Franklin will let his boys take a game off, you’ve never watched James Franklin.
Team is now playing for pride and, more importantly, draft spots.
Stanford +5.5 vs. Washington
Well, doesn’t it seem like every year Stanford has one of these games? Primetime television, Top-10 team coming to visit? Remember 2007 when they took out the invincible USC program?
UTSA -8 vs. UAB
As we pointed out a few weeks ago, UAB has overachieved a tremendous amount for a program in its first year back on the scene. They just re-extended their coach Bill Clark and have put him in a place for National Coach of the Year.
But yeah… This is still a program that did not play football at all last season. They’ve earned their hype, with a 6-3 overall record. But the team’s two game win streak stops Saturday night.
Ball State +32 @NIU
Thursday nighter and a 32-point spread. Dinner’s served.
UCLA -2.5 vs. Arizona State
Well, well. Again We’ve got the overcorrection meter through the roof. UCLA’s program hasn’t shown up for Jim Mora at all, leading many to wonder if that’s a landing spot for Chip Kelly. The team is under .500 but undefeated at home this season and well undervalued.
Meanwhile, Arizona State has covered five of its last six games including two double-digit upsets. Both teams come back towards the middle, just like the rest of ’em.
Go over 67.5 here, too.
Who Cares? We’re Rich!
Florida +7.5 @ South Carolina
Call me crazy for this one. It’s a bounce back. South Carolina gave Georgia all they could handle and potentially had their spirits broken. Florida, meanwhile, is playing the most dangerous type of football a team can play: with nothing to lose.
Vanderbilt -2.5 vs. Kentucky
Air Force -3 vs. Wyoming
In May, Wyoming’s quarterback Josh Allen got written up as the top pick in next year’s NFL draft. Now he’s completing 55% of his passes and averaging two yards per pass less than 2016. Something is wrong there.
Bonus NFL Picks:
San Francisco +2.5 vs. New York Giants
Atlanta -3 vs. Dallas
Chicago vs. Green Bay UNDER 39.0
