The SEC Is Owning Basketball Recruiting Just Like Football

SEC

The SEC is dominating the 2020 recruiting class in…college hoops.

For years the SEC has been at the top of the recruiting rankings for college football. Just look at the past 2020 football recruiting class. Seven out of the top tens classes were from the SEC.

Now, the SEC owns basketball rankings, and just like football, it’s not even close.

Kentucky

Kentucky tops the rankings with the number one overall class according to 247Sports. 6-foot-7 shooting guard Terrence Clarke leads the way for the Wildcats as the 4th highest-rated recruit according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Fellow 6-foot-6 shooting guard BJ Boston also ranks inside the top-10 at 7th in the nation. The Wildcats signed three 5-stars and three 4-stars.

Tennessee

The Vols have the 5th highest-rated class in the nation behind Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, and Michigan. The two five-stars, Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson lead the highest-rated recruiting class in Tennessee history.

One of Tennessee’s weaknesses the past couple of years was bench depth from the guard position.

Jordan Bone, Jordan Bowden, and Lamonte Turner were all essential to the recent success. However, there hasn’t been anyone else step up.

Springer is a player with special offensive talent. He’s built to finish through contact and can score at all three levels on the court. Springer should add some rebounding ability from the guard spot as well.

Johnson is an explosive athlete. His outside jumper could and will improve, but it’s not a weakness. Many college basketball scouts say Johnson has the potential to be one of the best freshman perimeter defenders in the nation next season.

The 5th ranked class also includes 4-star Corey Walker, who ranks 57th in the nation. Early on in the recruiting process, Walker was ranked as high as 36.

Then there’s Malachi Wideman, football commit, who plans to walk on the team.

The Vols also picked up E.J. Anosike from the transfer portal via Sacred Heart.

Rest of the SEC

LSU, Arkansas, and Auburn come in at 6th, 7th, and 8th in the rankings. Both LSU and Auburn have a 5-star commit.

In just his second season in Fayetteville, Eric Musselman has a very impressive recruiting class. The Razorbacks don’t have a 5-star in the class. However, they did sign four 4-stars. All four players rank inside the top-100 according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Further down the rankings but still in the top-50 are: Alabama (17), Georgia (27), and Florida (29).

Give it a couple of years, and the SEC will be the top conference for both football and basketball.
