Scott Frost is a name that has been rumored for numerous high-profile coaching positions, and for good reason. Frost’s UCF Knights are undefeated and in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2013, when they defeated Art Briles and Bryce Petty in the Fiesta Bowl. This comes just two years removed from an 0-12 season.
Positives
Frost has taken a program that isn’t known for its dominance and presence in college football and turned it into a powerhouse. The Knights have been blowing teams out this year, scoring more than 60 points twice — even scoring 73 points in a win over Austin Peay.
He’s also worked under coaches like offensive genius Chip Kelly, Mark Helfrich, and former Nebraska head coach Frank Solich. That’s a pretty impressive list of teachers for the 42 year old. Oh, he also played under Bill Walsh, Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick and… Jon Gruden.
Frost has taken a dumpster fire 0-12 team to an undefeated ranked team in two years! He could try to follow Butch Jones, who seemingly did the opposite in two years.
After building his brand and style of football for years, Frost is on the verge of a jump to a prestigious coaching gig.
Tennessee fans can just replace the UCF faces and mascots with John Currie and Smokey for the gif below and he’s even meme-able.
Negatives
Frost’s squad is undefeated, but hasn’t faced any real competition. They have struggled against teams like SMU and Navy, which is a red flag for Tennessee fans looking for the next Phil Fulmer.
Also, this is his first head coaching role. He has normally shadowed more proven head coaches and didn’t get as big of a slice of the pie.
Hopefully the man at UCF can land a good bowl this year and beat a proven and established team. This will work wonders for him when looking for a new job in the offseason, assuming he hasn’t been plucked by bowl season.
Final Say
Scott Frost has shown ability to coach a team to wins while developing players, something Butch Jones couldn’t do. He hasn’t had a key win in his tenure at UCF, but if he were given the talent that the Vols possess, the sky could be the limit for Frost.
But, with bigger names (Jon Gruden and Dan Mullen) in the picture, he may be looked over by the university. If that happens, it could cost the Vols.
