Santiago Vescovi Knows How Good Tennessee Can Be

Santiago Vescovi wasn’t prepared for the quick action he’d have to take whenever Covid started to wreak havoc upon the country last Spring.

It was a five hour trip to South Carolina for John Fulkerson, a friend and Vescovi. They had decided to get out of town for a few days, heading East. They only made it one day on the trip. Vescovi was notified that he had to get back to Uruguay before borders started to close down, and they had to do it quick. The trio got back in their car and drove straight back to Knoxville, so that Vescovi could fill out the necessary paperwork and be on an 11am flight.

Talk about a crazy sequence of events.

Santiago said it was an easy transition back home though, mainly because Covid hadn’t been a huge factor for the area. There was a reason he stayed in Uruguay for so long as well, it was easier to play competitive basketball.

“In Uruguay it was way easier because COVID was a smaller thing. We had very few cases and by the time I was there we only had around 60 total active cases in the whole country. So, it was basically me working out by myself with the strength and condition coach I knew, and also playing five-on-five with guys that I knew, and I think that really helped us to grow along with just knowing that the environment was safe.”

Vescovi also mentioned how he’s taken care of his body while away from the Tennessee campus. He would workout with a personal trainer, while also getting in a ton of work on the court.

“I really experienced a big change in my game and my body, and I have been feeling it during practice. I feel way quicker, I feel leaner also because I got leaner when I was working out back at home. I feel that is really going to help me first off from a defensive stand point, because I will be able to guard quicker guards, and also In terms of the offense I believe it will help me a lot because I am feeling better and I am quicker, and I can go by guys, so I think that is a big difference in my game.”

When asked about his three-point shooting, Vescovi said he’s worked hard to improve his shot.

“I’ve been working a lot on my three point shot. I feel way better than i did last semester. I feel way better shooting right now.”

There are also a bunch of newcomers on this Tennessee basketball team, which Santiago knows will only help this group.

“Keon is really athletic and can shoot the ball. Jaden really talented and athletic, he just plays the way he feels, instincts are really good. Corey Walker is a big man who can do so much. EJ is so strong. I’d rather not go up against him. He’s a unit. You can’t stop him.”

This 2020-2021 Tennessee basketball team has the potential to be very special. While surrounded with the weapons at multiple positions, opposing teams will be forced to defend all five players differently. The point guard play alone should cause severe headaches for the opposition.

We’re getting closer, and Tennessee basketball is going to be a must see event this season. They definitely have a squad that should contend for a Championship.
