REPORT: Mike Gundy Emerges As Tennessee Coaching Candidate, Again

Two days removed from the Greg Schiano fiasco, Tennessee athletic director John Currie is on the move again, and this time it looks like Tennessee is trying to bring the mullet to Knoxville.

Reports coming from Stillwater, Oklahoma, say that John Currie is set to meet Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy in Dallas today at noon EST. Another source reported that Tennessee is even willing to double Gundy’s salary.

Tennessee tried to make this move in 2012, and while Gundy expressed interest, he ended up using the Vols’ offer as leverage to earn a larger salary with Oklahoma State. However, if the report that his salary would be doubled is true, it may be too much for Gundy to pass up.

Gundy is an Oklahoma State alum, playing quarterback for the Pokes in the late 80s, and has been on the coaching staff there since 2001. In 2005 he was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach, and is 113-53 since, as the winningest coach in Oklahoma State history.

This would likely be considered a home-run hire, especially after the embarrassment Tennessee’s administration has suffered this week. It remains to be seen if this is for real, or just a repeat of the 2012 meeting.

UPDATE: Gundy was seen at the Dallas Renaissance Hotel by some Fox Sports Knoxville listeners Tuesday night, it is unknown if he was there to talk to UT officials or not.

It has now been reported by college football insider Brett McMurphy that Gundy will has turned down Tennessee’s offer of approximately $7 million a year.

Gundy took to Twitter to reaffirm his commitment to Oklahoma State as well, confirming that athletic director John Currie will have to take Tennessee’s search for a head coach elsewhere.
