OPINION: I’m Scared The Vols Might Only Win One More Game

Vols

The Vols hold a 2-3 record with five games left in the 2020 season. Most fans thought a 3-2 record was more likely at this point, but that’s now the case thanks to the blowout loss to Kentucky.

I know it sounds crazy, but 3-2 would feel much different.

As I watched the rest of the SEC this weekend, I finally realized that Tennessee might only have one win left on the schedule. It’s depressing.

Houston Kress agrees. He’s typically a more positive fan, but this morning on 3&OUT, Kress said maybe just one more win for the Vols.

It sounds pathetic and almost unbelievable, but that’s where we are on Monday morning before the Arkansas game.

Could I be wrong? Absolutely. In fact, I hope I am.

However, it’s more likely the Vols finish 1-4 down the stretch than 4-1 or even 3-2.

Let’s dive into each future opponent.

Arkansas

The Razorbacks are a much better team under Sam Pittman.

Coming into the season, I wrote a big W in sharpie beside Arkansas. A (for sure) win isn’t the case anymore, and now I have my whiteout handy.

The Razorbacks are 2-3 on the season, and only one of their losses look bad. Last week, Arkansas was able to play Texas A&M tough, but they couldn’t stop the run giving up 182 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Maybe the Vols can take advantage of a struggling front seven.

Texas A&M

I think we all mocked Texas A&M after their 17-12 season-opening win over Vanderbilt. I’ll admit, I overreacted a bit.

But, now the Aggies look for real, and some even consider Jimbo and company as outside contenders for a spot in the College Football Playoffs.

After losing to Alabama, the Aggies have won three-straight over Florida, Mississippi State, and Arkansas.

Mond has been great during the three-game win streak throwing for 737 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception.

If the Vols beat Arkansas, maybe their confidence will keep them in a game against the Aggies.

Auburn

Auburn feels like the luckiest team in the SEC. However, the 48-11 win over LSU has me a bit worried.

Maybe LSU isn’t good this season, but a 37-point win is impressive.

The Tigers are 4-2 but could easily be 2-4, so who knows what you’re going to get. Would it surprise me if Tennessee beat Auburn? No. But I wouldn’t expect a win.

Vanderbilt

Honestly, the Vanderbilt game is the only one I feel good about the Vols winning. The Commodores are bad, like really really bad.

Florida

The Gators could score 50 points against Tennessee if they want to. They’ve scored at least 38 points in every game this season, and their offense looks unstoppable at times.

Kyle Task has thrown for 1,341 yards with 18 touchdowns and just two interceptions in four games.

And, we all know the history with the Vols and Gators.

I hate being so negative, but as of right now, I don’t see the Vols winning more than two games the rest of the way. In fairness, I didn’t see Jeremy Pruitt turning it around last year, either.

Hopefully, I’ll be wrong two years in a row.
