Let’s Overreact To How Good Tennessee Basketball Looked In Practice

Tennessee basketball

Tennessee basketball hit the court for practice on Tuesday afternoon, and I was so excited to watch the video.

Fox Sports Knoxville’s own Trey Wallace posted the full video on Twitter.

The football team is on a bye, and Jeremy Pruitt appears that he will stick with Jarrett Guarantano as his starting quarterback. Other than practice notes, there isn’t much going on.

Y’all know I’m more of a basketball guy anyways, and I want to overreact to a five-minute practice video. So. Here. We. Go.

The Barnes Offense

The first bit of the video focused on the Vols running the Barnes’ offense that is hard to love but easy to hate. When there is a big guy (like Grant Williams) who can control post position and a point guard (like Jordan Bone), the offense is hard to stop.

However, the offense takes time to master as simple as it is, especially if you don’t have the talent.

Fulkerson showed flashes late in the season with the ability to demand the ball on the quick entry pass. The more he grows as the player, the more dominant he will be.

The question is, can guys like E.J. Anosike, Yves Pons, Corey Walker, and Uros Plavsic pull their weight down low?

E.J. Anosike

Anosike is an older player who has a high IQ for the game. He will be just fine. He’s also 6-foot-7, 245 pounds.

Yesterday Santiago Vescovi was asked about Anosike. “You cannot stop him going to the rim. I would rather just move to the side rather than staying in front of him.”

We saw Fulkerson turn into a post-point last season with his ability to see the double team early and make the right pass. Anosike will be able to do the same.

Which brings me to my next point. This team is going to pass the ball well.

Great Ball Movement

One of the things I couldn’t but notice was how well this team shared the ball. Throughout the whole practice, guys were making the right pass that led to points. It felt like that special team Tennessee basketball had two years ago.

Look, I know how you feel. I was a bit disappointed as well. However, Plavsic looked good in the practice film. He scored a few times with his back to the basket on Anosike.

Plavsic also looked a step faster. Maybe less thinking and just playing. Anytime you can have a 7-footer make a difference down low, your team is going to be better.

JJJ

Josiah-Jordan James looked faster as well. He flew all over the court and led a fast break with a quick pass to the corner. One of his flaws last season was he didn’t make the pass quick enough.

He even picked up where he left off from SEC play by hitting a long three-point jumper. JJJ shot over 40% from the three-point line during SEC play last season.

Jaden Springer

Jaden Springer looks to attack every chance he gets and does so, flying to the rim. Springer got deep in the lane one play, something Barnes loves for his point guards to do, and drew the double team.

He bounced a perfect pass to Olivier Nkamhoua for an and-one.

Dudes Were Battling

The practice was intense. Guys were playing hard on defense, crashing the boards, and causing problems on the offensive end.

Tennessee basketball will be entertaining to watch this season, and I’m going to overreact each step of the way.
