Kingston Harris became one of the first Vol commitments to send in an LOI during the first morning of the early signing period, completing a short five-day process in which Harris visited Tennessee, committed on December 18, then signed on the 20th. Jeremy Pruitt, Chris Rumph and the new staff certainly made an impressive impact on the IMG Academy standout, and now he’ll anchor the middle part of a defensive line haul that’s raising some eyebrows.
Harris is a 3-star defensive tackle that 247Sports.com’s composite rankings consider the No. 78 defensive tackle in the country. According to the official Tennessee football account, Harris recorded 40 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks during his senior season.
Harris provides maybe my favorite film play of any Tennessee December signee at 4:23 of the highlights above. While lined up at defensive tackle, no offensive lineman engages him. Instead of over-committing or chasing the play, he shows signs of a mature, disciplined player — Harris buzzes his feet in his gap. IMG Academy in Florida isn’t short on talent, and this play shows it isn’t short on coaching, either.
To further that point, Harris’ technique is pretty well-defined. His hands are always active and he’s quick off the ball. Another disciplined aspect to the 6-foot-3, 285-pound tackle is his ability to get off a block and get hands on a ball carrier. It won’t take long for Pruitt and Rumph to find a place for Harris, who has a bright future in Knoxville.
