The Vols continue their preparations for a matchup against the Gators on Wednesday. The Vols are dealing with contact tracing issues and continue to prepare for a game without multiple players. Jeremy Pruitt met with the media Wednesday evening to discuss the ongoing week of practice.
The Vols had another round of Covid testing on Tuesday, and Jeremy Pruitt said they had 2 positive results. Pruitt mentioned that one player and one personnel member had tested positive, but they will make sure it wasn’t a false positive.
Tennessee is already missing multiple starters on both sides of the football. They’ve had to get creative in practice with personnel at certain positions.
When asked about the starting quarterback position, Jeremy Pruitt wasn’t ready to name one yet.
“We will make a decision as we get closer to the game.”
As we’ve previously reported this week, Harrison Bailey has been getting a good amount of reps with the first team. On Tuesday, the quarterbacks were Harrison Bailey, JT Shrout, and Brian Maurer. Jarrett Guarantano hasn’t been a part of practice for over a week now. Jeremy Pruitt mentioned recently that one of the QB’s was in contact tracing, and we believe that to be Guarantano.
So, this will make things interesting this weekend. Jeremy Pruitt could’ve easily come out and named Bailey his starting quarterback tonight, but he decided to hold off on that, again. Pruitt did say that Bailey “will definitely play Saturday,” but also said, “To what extent, we’ve not decided yet.”
Jeremy Pruitt mentioned on Monday that he expects some of the players in quarantine to be available for the game on Saturday. Will that include Guarantano? That’s a question that will be answered very soon. There’s a good chance that Guarantano will be available, so I will be interested to see how Pruitt handles this situation. I expect Bailey to be the starter unless something drastically changes between now and then.
The Vols will be looking for help in the pass-rushing department after the dismissal of Kivon Bennett. One player to watch will be Morven Joseph. According to Pruitt, he has moved to the inside linebacker position on 1st and 2nd down but switches to a pass rusher on 3rd down.
“He’s benefited from us not playing, to be honest. Being able to go back to camp fundamentals.”
Look for Tyler Barron and Roman Harrison to get additional playing time as well.
Tennessee will be back on the practice field Thursday afternoon as they wrap up the game plan install for Florida. The Vols will also have one more round of Covid testing before taking the field on Saturday.
