Four-star Jahmai Mashack announced his commitment to the Vols on Tuesday afternoon.
The 6-foot-5 small forward from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., is a top-50 prospect according to 247Sports. He’s the 9th rated small forward and the third highest-rated player from California. Looking at the 247Sports Composite rankings, Mashack comes in at 92nd and the 16th highest-rated small forward.
Mashack will bring more athleticism and physical defensive play to the Vols next season. He is very active on defense and always playing the passing lanes.
Much like Yves Pons and newcomer Keon Johnson, Mashack will guard multiple positions at the next level. Some recruiting analysts believe Mashack is one of the best defenders from the 2021 class.
One part of Mashack’s game that will have to improve at the next level is his handles. While he gets most of his points slashing to the rim, he doesn’t have much of a left hand.
His outside jumper isn’t great but looks okay despite the release being a tad bit too slow.
It’s hard to be negative about another top-50 recruit that has outstanding defensive ability. Mashack should be in the mix for playing time as a freshman.
Mashack is an excellent addition to the 2021 class that features five-star point guard Kennedy Chandler.
Who knows what the 2021 roster will look like, but it appears Rick Barnes is going to keep on reloading with elite talent.
