Sophomore forward Grant Williams was named SEC Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Vols to wins over Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. Williams averaged 23 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks over the week.

Williams dominated in the comeback victory against the Commodores, pouring in a career-high 37 points. That output is also the most by any SEC player in conference play so far this season and the most by any Tennessee player since Ron Slay scored 38 in 2003. In addition to Williams’ scoring output, the Charlotte native added seven rebounds, three blocks and a pair of assists to put away the team’s in-state rival.

Despite a poor shooting performance, Williams still played an important role in the team’s victory against the Aggies. He played good defense and kept the ball moving quickly, helping the Vols finish with 16 assists on 25 shots. The sophomore forward finished with nine points, five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block.

Williams’ season-long averages of 29.3 minutes, 16.7 points, and 6.7 rebounds all lead the team. His scoring and rebound averages are fifth and tenth in the conference, respectively. In SEC play, however, Williams is averaging a league-high 19.6 points per contest.

The next week for Williams and Tennessee begins with a road trip to play Missouri Tigers. After that meeting with former Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin, the Vols travel to play the South Carolina Gamecocks. A pair of dominant Grant Williams performances in those games can help Tennessee climb back up the conference standings. Additionally, being a two-time Player of the Week would help Williams earn more consideration for conference postseason accolades.
