With the above tweet, Geno Smith, the backup(?) quarterback of the New York Giants lit Twitter on fire. As you can imagine, the responses are all over the place, but Smith nonetheless had an eventful night of debate.

Responses ranged from…

to…

And some of the responses were just plain weird…

This, along with other tweets suggesting he’s buying into the theory, is just the latest in a long line of disappointments in the quarterbacks career. After a promising rookie season, Smith has not won a game as a starter since the end of the 2014 season when he was with the New York Jets. Smith was traded to the New York Giants from the Jets after former New York Jets linebacker Ikemefuna Enemkpali sucker punched Smith over an alleged debt dispute, breaking the quarterbacks jaw in two places.

During the 2017 NFL season, Smith started a game over Eli Manning, ending Manning’s streak of starting 210 consecutive games. Smith would go on to give up two turnovers on the way to a 24-17 loss to the Raiders. Manning was reinstated as starter the following week.

Throughout his five year career, Smith has been sacked 80 times in 35 games, while giving up 36 interceptions. His .8:1 career touchdown to interception ratio along with this flat-earth blunder will no doubt lead to some questions about his decision making abilities on and off the field.

Smith has since tried to walk back his initial tweet.

There’s nothing wrong with trying to make people question their own “beliefs”, but it does become a problem when you’re really just questioning facts that were established a few hundred years before the invention of toilet paper.
