Former Vols DC To Be Hired By South Florida

Sports Illustrated reported Thursday night that former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Jancek will be South Florida’s new safeties coach.

Jancek was fired earlier this month and replaced by Penn State defensive coordinator Bob Shoop. In his three years with the Vols, Jancek performed relatively well. His 2015 unit finished 7th in the SEC in total defense and 36th nationally. Prior to coming to Tennessee in 2013, he coached at Cincinnati with Butch Jones from 2010-2012 as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He also coached linebackers at Georgia for five years and was the defensive coordinator at Central Michigan for a year before leaving for Athens.

For South Florida, this is a home run hire. Third year coach Willie Taggart has steadily been improving the Bulls, taking them from 2-10 in his first year to 8-5 and the program’s first bowl appearance since 2010 in 2015. With the addition of Jancek, USF should only improve. This appears to be a beneficial hire from all sides, even if Jancek had to drop down from coordinator to assistant.
