After only 8 short months in the position, John Currie has been relieved of his duties as Tennessee athletic director. Currie had been under a lot of heat after multiple head coaching deals fell through.
Everyone saw this move coming, it was all just a matter of when. From the whole Greg Schiano fiasco to the rumors that him and Jimmy Haslam were at odds about Gruden to the numerous coaches that have stepped out of the running. With the athletic director position now open in the middle of a coaching search, that either means that Tennessee has found a new head coach or the Vols are a ways away from finding one.
Just filed to ESPN: Tennessee has parted ways with AD John Currie on the heels of what has been a disastrous Tennessee coaching search. He met with university officials on Friday morning, and the decision was made then.

With Currie out, David Blackburn and Phil Fulmer have emerged as the leading candidates for his replacement. Both of these men are very experienced and would be able to recruit both coaches and players to come to the University of Tennessee.
Fulmer was one of the best coaches in Tennessee football history and many think he would be great at finding the next one.
Sources: John Currie was prepared to hire Mike Leach but university officials wouldn’t allow him to do so. Phillip Fulmer has been sabotaging search process in hopes to become Tennessee’s AD

People have been calling for Currie’s head ever since the Greg Schiano situation happened. There have been Twiiter petitions, chants at basketball games, and displays on the Rock that echoed many voices from Vol Nation.
With all of this craziness going on at the University of Tennessee, the only thing that the program needs to be worried about right now is finding a new head football coach.
