Christian McCaffrey is the best running back in the NFL, and now he’s getting best running back money.
According to Adam Schefter, the Carolina Panthers are signing McCaffrey to a four-year extension averaging $16 million per year.
The deal makes McCaffrey the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
We’ve seen this movie before.
Running backs look good in their first couple of seasons in the league, which leads to big contracts.
Most recently, Todd Gurley got paid a few years ago, and due to injuries and maybe just not being as good, he hasn’t lived up to the money the Rams gave him.
However, McCaffrey is a different player. He’s a difference-maker both as a runner and a pass-catcher out of the backfield.
McCaffrey is the only player to rush for 2,500 yards and have 2,500 receiving yards through the first three years of his career.
In his first three seasons, McCaffrey has 303 catches, which is second-most ever by any player.
McCaffrey said the following about his contract extension, “I’m so excited to continue my career in Carolina. I want to thank Mr. Tepper, Marty Hurney, and Coach Rhule for the opportunity to help lead this great franchise, and to all my teammates for their help along the way. And to Panthers fans, KEEP POUNDING!”
McCaffrey was the 8th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and has undoubtedly panned out. However, new Head Coach Matt Rhule and Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady have to find a way to keep McCaffrey fresh.
He accounted for 91% of Carolina’s offensive snaps and finished with 2000+ yards from scrimmage last season.
That’s a massive workload.
Year after year, we continue to see contracts grow to larger amounts. And, year after year, we also question those decisions.
However, it seems all that money heading to McCaffrey’s bank account will be worth it.
