Five CBS writers ranked the best coaches in the country. Tennessee’s Butch Jones ranked 52 in the country.
Glass half-empty: Out of 65 coaches, there are only thirteen coaches at Power 5 schools that CBS writers consider worse than Butch Jones.
A Champion of Life, but not a champion of our rankings. Still, in my opinion, this is a pretty steep drop considering all the injuries Tennessee dealt with last year. Raised expectations will do that, though.
Ah, yes. The streak of college football articles written that contain a “Champions of Life” jab extends to 23,532.
Glass half-full: Tennessee has the third best coach in the SEC East. That’s right, the SEC east has four coaches in the bottom 14 of the rankings. Barry Odom (62), Mark Stoops (56), Kirby Smart (54) and Derek Mason (53) are all worse than Butch Jones.
Butch Jones fell 19 spots from his ranking of 33 in the 2016 poll, which is NOT the largest fall of any coach. Shoutout to Jim Mora for falling from 29th all the way to 49.
So, if you’re keeping track, Tennessee football generated the second most revenue in the entire country, and, according to a group of experts, has the 52nd best coach in the country.
