Canales leaves door open for Vols 2-QB system

The Vols practiced Thursday for the last time this spring before Saturday’s Orange & White “Game.” The most interesting storyline heading into the offseason surrounds the quarterback situation between junior Quinten Dormady and redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano.

First year quarterbacks coach Mike Canales spoke with the media afterwards, which brought about some conversation on social media. Because a frontrunner hasn’t been named, a reporter asked if there would be a dual-quarterback system, but there was some confusion from the question.

Canales responded:

In terms of the program…in terms of what we’re going to be doing here? Like recruiting a dual-threat quarterback or that we have one here? Oh okay, you mean a two-quarterback system…you kind of messed me up with the ‘dual’ there but I get you now. Uh, sure, why not?

Canales then when on to say that all the quarterbacks need to be ready at any moment, ranging from the starter to the last string. Though he didn’t say there would be a two-QB system, he also didn’t rule it out necessarily.

Dormady and Guarantano are talented players for sure and bring different styles to the table, so it wouldn’t exactly be surprising to see both receive a good amount of snaps this year. It may be best to go with a set starter during the season, but depending on how the season plays out, the Vols may have to deal that hand.
