It is our home, and, arguably, few states have meant more to the foundation of American music than our Volunteer State. Whether it’s the “Home of the Blues,” the “Birthplace of Rock and Roll,” and the home of Elvis in Memphis, the heart of Country (for better or worse) in Nashville, or East Tennessee’s contributions to the formation of Country and Bluegrass, there is so much musical history in this state.
Thus, plenty of songs throughout the decades have either been written about or made reference to Tennessee. With myself being one of the biggest music nerds at Fanrun, I have decided to compile some of the greatest and not so great songs about our home state.
I will go ahead and list some honorable mentions that aren’t included in detail in the “best” category. So, don’t send me tweets about songs I missed because I won’t respond to them.
- Patti Page – Tennessee Waltz
- Dolly Parton – My Tennessee Mountain Home
- Pam Tillis – Maybe It Was Memphis
- Emmylou Harris – Tennessee Rose
- Alabama – Tennessee River
Let us begin.
