Hi, what are you looking for?

6 things we know about new Vols DB coach Charlton Warren

Charlton Warren! Positive news!!!!!!!

1. Few, if any, have bad words to say about Warren.

The coverage on both the North Carolina and Nebraska side is positive for Warren, which is unusual. Whereas fans are quick to blame position coaches or coordinators for a group’s failure, I saw very little of that for Warren. If he does well at Tennessee, it could be a nice step to being a Power 5 defensive coordinator somewhere.

2. His previous three career stops are North Carolina (two years), Nebraska (one year), and Air Force (nine years).

Warren played at Air Force from 1995-1998, so that explains the longevity of his time there. If it means anything, he was also the “top recruiter” for the Falcons. The lowest rank of any Power 5 pass defense he’s had in QB rating is 53rd last season.

3. Warren’s Power 5 pass defenses have largely been successful and among the nation’s best.

Prior to arriving at UNC, Larry Fedora’s 2014 pass defense finished 117th nationally in opponent QB rating. They hired Warren to shore it up. Consequently, Warren’s first pass defense jumped 105 spots to 12th. Before that, his one pass defense at Nebraska ranked 4th in the same stat. However, his last three pass defenses at Air Force ranked 81st, 107th, and 124th. Tennessee would preferably receive the UNC/Nebraska performances.

4. This doesn’t seem to be a Butch Jones buddy hire.

I’ve looked all throughout my usual Internet sources and can’t find any solid record of Warren being friends with Jones. They haven’t worked together at any previous stop. Plus, unless I’m wrong, Bob Shoop and Warren have yet to work together. This simply seems like the two went out and got who they believed was the best available coach. Above all, that’s an attitude sorely needed at Tennessee right now.

5. Warren seems to be very intense and focused on technique in practice.

“That’s two pillows hitting! I want contact!”

6. The early reviews are in, and they seem positive.

I talked to my friend Adam McClintock at CFB Matrix about the hire earlier, as he works in-depth with college football analytics and coaching abilities. While his system doesn’t grade position coaches, he has a lot of experience with Nebraska football in the past. This was his take:

This article with 247’s North Carolina affiliate is heavy on the Warren love. It notes the vast improvements he made to UNC’s pass defense over the last two years. Moreover, Warren recruits the Atlanta and Jacksonville areas, both of which could be beneficial for Tennessee.

Thank you, Charlton Warren, for giving Tennessee fans some desperately-needed good news. Well…for now. Hey, at least it’s nice to have a fellow Warren in a position of power.
