Liam Doyle has become the fourth Tennessee baseball player ever to be named as a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award.

He was selected as one of three finalists for the award, USA Baseball announced today.

The Vols’ ace pitcher is joined by a pair of elite shortstops — Wehiwa Aloy (Arkansas) and Alex Lodise (Florida State).

The Golden Spikes Award is presented every year to the country’s best amateur baseball player. It is considered to be the most prestigious award in college baseball.

Doyle could become the first Vol to ever win the award. Todd Helton (1995), Chris Burke (2001), and Luke Hochevar (2001) were the previous finalists from UT.

Doyle was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Knoxville Regional, breaking Hochevar’s single-season strikeout record along the way.

On the year he boasts a 2.84 ERA with a 10-3 record and 15.46 strikeouts per nine innings — pacing the NCAA in that metric.

The Golden Spikes Award winner will be announced on June 21st.
